Lying comfortably in the lap of the Maiden of Finland in the heart of Saimaa, Savonlinna welcomes visitors to its unique lake scenery. This diverse region lets travellers indulge all their senses, both on land or on water.
The ambience of this small idyllic town is best experienced by enjoying a cup of coffee on the Market Square or one of the delightful summer terraces in the harbour area. The lively conversation of the natives and the friendly banter of the market vendors lend their own colour to the atmosphere of one of the most attractive summer markets in Finland. The experience can be further enhanced by a sampling of local delicacies, such as the traditional Savo pasties (bearing such original names as ‘lörtsyt’ or ‘möttöset’) or smoked vendace.
Seen from the lake, Savonlinna has a different face. The easiest way to enjoy the lake perspective is to step on board a steamboat and let the slow life grab hold of you. Another way, a little more taxing yet very rewarding, is to rent a canoe or rowing boat and paddle around the centre of Savonlinna.
Savonlinna is built on islands and is surrounded by Lake Saimaa, and thanks to an extensive network of cycle routes you will be able to explore this idyllic town in two completely different ways:
Spend a day canoeing or rowing: You can hire a canoe or rowing boat for a day from a convenient location near your hotel. While out on Lake Saimaa, you can take a break and enjoy a picnic lunch on one of the nearby islands or beaches. If you are up for a challenge, you can choose a 10-kilometre route around the town, for example.
Explore Savonlinna on two wheels: Thanks to extensive roadworks and the construction of a new parallel road, Savonlinna town centre benefits from an excellent network of cycle routes – if you are feeling adventurous, it is possible to cycle around the whole town. Cycling is an ideal way to visit the medieval Olavinlinna castle and the Savonlinna Provincial Museum, and the busy Market Square and its tasty treats are just a short ride away, too.
