Muikku – tasty local food from Lake Saimaa

Muikku is a species of freshwater fish, in English known as vendace. It is definitely one of Lake Saimaa’s best delicacies! You can taste muikku in almost any restaurant in the region. Muikku is enjoyed pan-fried, smoked, as soup or straight from the can. And don’t forget “muikkukukko”, a traditional Finnish dish with fish baked inside a loaf of bread. Puruveden muikku, Lake Puruvesi vendace, got EU name protection and protected designation of origin in 2013. This protection is proof that its origin, ingredients and production methods are known.

Taste muikku

Fried muikku can be found on the menu of most of our restaurants. We especially recommend Muikkuterassi, the roof terrace of Original Sokos Hotel Seurahuone in the Savonlinna city centre. The terrace is located on the 6th floor of the building, and the views over the city are wonderful. It is also the perfect place for watching amazing sunsets.
