This route is considered one of Finland’s most beautiful waterways—and rightfully so. Recognized as one of the country’s most scenic water routes, the Heinävesi route is also classified as a nationally valuable landscape area. It offers an almost untouched lake environment, where signs of human presence are limited to historic canals and picturesque village scenes.
The Heinävesi route connects Lakes Kallavesi and Haukivesi. It begins at Lake Kallavesi, passing through Vehmersalmi to Lakes Suvasvesi and Varisvesi, which are linked to Lake Kermajärvi via the Karvio rapids. Lake Kermajärvi is the main body of water along the route, known for its long, narrow bays and peninsulas, as well as its rocky and rugged shores. At its center, the wide open waters are framed by a maze of surrounding islands.
