Savonlinna Opera Festival
Savonlinna is known above all for the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Finnish soprano Aino Ackté organized the first opera festival in Olavinlinna Castle in 1912, and since then it has grown into an international cultural event.
The Savonlinna Opera Festival is internationally the best-known cultural event in Finland. Over the years, it has grown into a month-long international festival. Every year, it attracts approximately 70,000 guests, of which 10 percent are foreigners, to enjoy world-class opera in Savonlinna.
The Savonlinna Opera Festival provides more than just opera in a historic castle milieu, those visiting the festival get to also enjoy the charm of a small town, unique lake nature, bright summer nights and a strong cultural spirit. The venue for the Savonlinna Opera Festival is the unique, large castle courtyard of the northernmost medieval castle in the world Olavinlinna that has excellent acoustics and a 2,264-seat covered auditorium.
